I can’t get it to start PHD2… It’s giving me a “PDH2 has failed to calibrate… center” failure.
I went back to 2.3.12… and I’m having no issues.

I don’t think this is something that changed in 2.3.13.
How long of guide exposures were you taking? It looks like we told PHD to start guiding and it kept returning that it had a star selected.

All I know is it failed when I went to 2.3.13… and worked fine when I reset it back to 2.3.12.
I think you just got lucky. I was able to occasionally reproduce this. I talked with Andy and I believe we have a solution to this. This is also likely to happen in 2.3.12.

Would this perhaps be something that would be “fixed” by recovery mode? I vaguely recall seeing recovery mode
run briefly after auto-starting (specific time) a sequence because the guider did not start as expected. It did start
and run at the first recovery attempt.
This was a few days ago and as it had no practical effect, I did not pay a whole lot of attention so can’t be totally sure of the details, but that is my best recollection.

The latest version of PHD2. v2.3.0, (r893) has a fix that should make resuming the auto-guider much more reliable with 2.3.12 and 2.3.13.

I can reproduce this just about every time. If I do a ‘blind start’ of PHD2 (even with v2.3) it will find a star and start guiding. However, if I ‘pause’ the sequence and stop guiding, it won’t re-acquire the star if/when it starts back up from a timer. It’ll fail to acquire the star and fail out. This was not with 2.3.13. I imagine if it was set to always auto-select a guide star, this wouldn’t be a problem.
I haven’t been using recovery mode due to the weather around here.
Would recovery mode correct this? I’m assuming with the limited weather station support I can use recovery mode again.
Recovery mode may correct this as it would attempt to restart guiding if it failed.
Since you’re already using 2.4 I would recommend trying the “PHD (New)” auto guider. The “New” variant allows PHD to have more control of what it needs to do to start guiding. So rather than SGP automating PHD we just tell it to start…and let PHD figure out the rest. This could mean finding a new star, calibrating, etc.

Please keep in mind that 2.4 is probably a little more “beta” than usual at this point. Betas always start out rough and will smooth out towards the end. I would keep 2.3 hanging around as well. We’ll get 2.4 stable but it will likely take a little longer than 2.3 did.
