Plate solve fails

The only bit of data that SGP passes to ansvr is the image scale.

If you have images that are failing to solve for you yet succeeding for me it has to be a difference in our ansvr settings or the indexes that you have installed, or the image scale setting in SGP.

After reinstalling your index files, do any of the images that solved for me fail for you?

These are the ones that I tested and they all solved for me: M001, M042, M094, M048.

Please try those ones again and let me know if any of them fail. If they do we will have a case where we can proceed to pinpoint the difference between my system and yours.

All of those images fail in 5 seconds or less. They fail in both “solve” and “blind solve”. It makes no difference if I insert the scale in “hints”. The profile that I am using has the computed scale of 2.060.

I also have 4 images that succeed with plate solve. They solve in 5 seconds or less and are solved with index 4209 and 4210. I have installed indices 4207 to 4219. Watching the ansvr log, it always starts with 4212 and works its way down to 4207 1-10.

My ansvr settings are:

solver time limit: 480
scale error: 5
down sample: 2
Epoch: J2000
noise level: blank
sort star brightness: not checked
Objects: 50
Depth: 1-10
Additional arguments: blank

The profile that I use in SGP has a scale of 2.060

Here are my ansvr settings. I only set Scale error estimate = 5 and Downsample = 2; all the advanced options are blank (the default).

Could you give those settings a try?

Okay I see two problems in your settings, Frank. Depth 1-10 is only going to check the 10 brightest objects in the frame. You’re also only specifying 50 objects but it will only use 10 due to the depth setting.

M042 - solved using objects 11-20 index 4110 - so you would fail to solve this because of depth.
Also the downsampling process takes slightly over a minute

So what we have is this:

  1. You can’t solve anything using anything but the 10 most brightest objects so remove your depth setting entirely
  2. I have solved all plates using objects 1-150 so set your objects to 150. I have found if it takes more than 150 then it won’t solve anyway
  3. I checked the code in fitsbin.c and you will get a “Couldn’t find table xxxx in file yyy” any time the an FITS file is missing a table. That verifies what Andy said about corrupt indexes. We know for sure that 4201-13 is corrupt (but you don’t need it anyway - see #7). To find out which others are corrupt download this http://md5deep.sourceforge.net/ and do an MD5SUM on all your index files. I’ll paste below what they should be. Anything with a different value should be replaced with a fresh copy. I’ll put my MD5SUMs at the end of this.
  4. I see you are using the G or B filters for some of the images. That should be okay but a Lum filter is better and a blue is better than green for most CCDs. You might want to set Lum in SGPro in the plate solving control panel.
  5. I solved all of these plates in less than 70 seconds with the majority of them taking 20-30 secs to down sample, and 10 or so to solve except for M042 which took about 2m to downsample…
  6. The number of index files isn’t important if SGPro is sending the arcsecs per pixel. It will use only the ones that match the image resolution.
  7. Your camera is 1.9 x 1.4 degrees. You need down to about 10% of your widest field for index files. For you that is .14 degrees or 8.4 arc minutes. You need the index files from 4219-4204-. You will not use 4203, 4202*, 4201*, and 4200* with your camera. When solving it starts as 4219 and works to 4200-* because the indexes are named after the scale so 4219 is larger scale than 4218. It tries to solve less resolution to more. You do not need the 41xx files I have. Those are for wide field solves. You should have index-4204-* thru index.4219. Anyone wanting to know what index files they will use, take your smallest axis in degrees after a solve times 0.6 then check the table here: Astrometry.net code README — Astrometry.net master documentation.

Andy, Mick,

Success! I eliminated the entries in the advanced field of ansvr settings and now I am able to solve all 11 of the test images. These are images from my archive and not live images that I would normally be solving on. I am away from my observatory for a time so likely will not be able to give it a good test unless I can do something with my DSLR.

Thanks to you both and I am sure you will be called upon again for assistance.
