Auto Focus and green circles around stars

I am just about ready to start setting up the configuration for auto focusing and I have read the documentation but I came across something that was not quite clear to me and internet searches did not provide an answer.

In the documentation ( Understanding Auto Focus) there is a mention of “green circles around stars” and I am trying to determine what the green circles actually mean.

Do the green circles denote only the stars that are being used when calculating the Half Flux Radius values and is this different from the “Number of stars found” value shown on the Image Statistics module?

The number of stars used in auto focus will top out around 300 but the number of stars found can be higher. The circled stars are the ones that were used in the focus run.
