Connecting to mount

I must have missed something…How do I connect to my Losmandy G11 w/Gemini 1? I have downloaded the ascom drivers but nothing seems to work.

Am I in the wrong place? Using a win 10 machine. Shouldn’t there be some connection to the mount (Gemini)?

Stu

You can initiate the connection in multiple ways. I always preferred to open the Gemini control software, connect to the mount and then connect SGP to the Gemini. However, you should be able to click the “Connect” button in SGP and have it start up the Gemini connection for you.

Whatever you do make sure that you are using the correct COM port in the Gemini settings or nothing will work. I’d recommend disconnecting all other hardware so you’re left with a single COM port. Or disconnecting the Gemini and Reconnecting it and seeing which COM port changes in the Windows Device Manager.

Thanks,
Jared

Jared, thanks for your reply…however, currently there is no connection between the computer and the gemini 1. I run the Gemini 1 from the handbox. The only other connection is the autoguider cable from the computer to the autoguider port on the Gemini 1. I think there needs to be another cable from the computer to the Gemini 1…maybe at the unused RS-232 port. But, how to wire that? I don’t remember if I got a cable when I bought my mount or not.

Once I have the hardware connected correctly…I know to hit the connect button, but my problem is a physical connection between the computer and the gemini 1. What do I need?

Stu

Stu,
I have the same setup - G11 Gemini 1. Yes, you do need a cable from the computer to the Gemini RS232 port. You are using a Win 10 machine so it is likely you need a USB to RS232 dongle (like I have). You may be able to find an RS232 (RJ45) cable for the Gemini - I had to make one.

After you get your physical connection settled, like all legacy COM ports you will need to match COM port numbers on the ASCOM Gemini telescope profile to that of the Gemini box as well as the baud rate.

You can stay on this public thread or PM me if you need further troubleshooting. Happy to help if you need it.

Oh and BTW, you can ditch the autoguider port if you want to and guide through the ASCOM connection (RS232). One less cable to worry about.

Hi Jim…and thanks for the info. I have seen your name before on some other group(s)…forgot which one, at one point I received mail from about 30 groups as I was getting into this pass time.

I think I have found a cable that will work…it’s the Losmandy GCC system cable. I just ordered it and also the USB to RS232 dongle like you mentioned from another company. If I’m able to connect to the Gemini 1 with this rig, it will open up a lot of the SGPro features that I have not been able to try yet.

Thanks again,

Stu

OK Stu. Glad to see you are on a solution path.

Also, I spoke to the people at Losmandy awhile back on the GCC cable. Apparently there is one for the Gemini2 and a different one for the Gemini1. They told me to order the GCC GEM 1 using the custom order form since it is not listed on their accessories page.

Yep…I got the one for the Gemini 1

Stu
