Looking for some insight on how the shoestring DSUSB functions inside SGP. I’m able to connect my older Nikon D3s directly via USB and get up to 30s exposures as others have posted here. I’d like to gain access to bulb mode for longer exposures and understand I’ll need a DSUSB adapter. My question is:
Does SGP recognize the DSUSB adapter as the camera? Will my images populate into SGP via the original camera to PC USB connection?
Or, is it essentially the same as using an intervelometer, where SGP just has control of the button? (Images stored locally on cameras card).
I 3D printed a bracket to adapt my EAF with my Nikon lenses and my goal was to utilize SGPs autofocus routine for some wide field shots. I’m able to produce a “U” shaped autofocus plot but if I go the DSUSB route and loose the image upload, that’s not really what I’m after.
Hoping someone may have had a similar experience, or has used a DSUSB successfully, and can share what the functionality is like.
Yes, SGP recognizes that a shoestring is attached and will send commands to it when the exposures are over a certain length (maybe 1 second). The images are downloaded into SGP as well.
I developed this functionality around 10 years ago and I’m not sure how much it’s been used as I can’t recall any issues or discussions about it in that time. So either it works perfectly or people just aren’t using cameras that require it any longer.
Please let me know how it works out. Think I still have a shoestring adapter around if it needs troubleshooting.
Thank you for the feedback! I kind of assumed that’s how it would work based on others posts, but couldn’t seem to find anything concrete online. I ended up ordering one and will report back once I get it set up.
I love SGP for my regular imaging and am excited to try and apply it to my widefield shots. I really appreciate the support!
I was finally able to test the shoestring adapter and am having some trouble. I’m able to use the DSUSBcheck program and actuate the shutter but SGP keeps crashing when trying to connect.
I’ve tried:
CF card in and out of the camera.
Both selecting D3s under the list in the camera options and leaving it on auto-select
Camera set to bulb or any other setting, same result
All selectors on Camera are set to manual
I’ve included a section from the log below which seems to be where things are going off the rails.
Any suggestions?
Thank you!

I had swapped to the 32 bit version of SGP for compatibility with the shoestring adapter and previously had only installed the 64 bit versions of the 2010, 2013, and 2015 redistributables.
Installed the 32 bit versions as well and it seems to have fixed the issue.
Now with shoestring adapter connected and the tethering usb from camera to PC, I am able to control and receive images into SGP.
