Is Dither (or Equivalent) Possible Without Using an Autoguider?

Hello! I’d like to find out if it is possible to dither without using an Autoguider.

My twilight flats would be helped by moving the telescope so that the camera moves the frame a couple of pixels between exposures (2 to 4 arcsec for my setup). However, at twilight, the autoguider (PHD2) will have no stars to guide on.

Upon reading the manual, it did not appear that there is a way to have SGPro dither without an autoguider? Is this true?

Is there another way to have SGPro to move the telescope 2 to 4 arcsec between frames? If so, I can create a twilight flats sequence with a dither equivalent.

Thank you and best regards.

Mike

Of course. In fact, if one has a mount that can go for long periods w/o needing to be guided and therefore are able to take unguided images, it is critical to be able to do this. Just select Direct Mount Guider and the amount of dither you want (determine by experimentation).

Thank you! This will work well for my evening twilight profile after which I can switch to the sequence that has the equipment profile that has the autoguider for my images.

Is there a way to do this within a sequence that has an autoguider selected in the equipment profile?

For morning twilight flats, the twilight flats target would be the last event in a sequence. The rest of the sequence have the equipment profile that has the autoguider selected (PHD2 in my case), so it appears that I would not be able to automatically use the Direct Mount Guider within a sequence that has a different autoguider selected. Is this correct, or is there another way to select "Direct Mount Guider" in a sequence that has the PHD2 autoguider selected in the equipment profile?

Thank you and best regards.

Hello! I think I’ve thought of a way to do this without dither.

For the last target in a sequence, I can send the scope to Park as a pre-event condition. My understanding is that Park would turn off tracking. Then, stars images would drift across the chip (if present during twilight) as twilight flat images are repeatedly taken.

Thank you and best regards.

Hello! My error. The sequence does not allow images to be taken once the Park command is issued. I’ll keep looking at this. Best regards.
