Manual Focuser strange behaviour

Hi,
I recently tried to use the manual rotator feature to frame some mosaic panels, but I could not get any useful angles from it.

My mosaic setup from the framing wizard indicates a rotation of 150 degrees.

Each time I tried to start the sequence it told me to rotate large amounts in varying direction. At one point it said to rotate 6 degrees, so it should have been close, but the image it had taken was visually off by a large amount, nearly 90 degrees to my eye.

The setup is an 80mm refractor and QSI683 camera and I’m using SGPro 4.4.1.1441. Eventually I disabled the manual rotator and ended up just taking pictures until visually they looked like the planned mosaic panels.

So, I have several questions:

  1. How is the mosaic rotation in the planning wizard measured? (what is its 0 angle?)
  2. What is the 0 reference for the images taken during sequence startup?
  3. How are angles reported after a plate solve of an image? (what is the 0 reference?)
  4. Are there some settings in the manual rotator that should be set?

Thanks,
Richard

There have been some other reports of this as well and is something we are investigating. Unfortunately it’s hard to track down because:

  • The issue seems to only be present in some parts of the sky
  • The issue seems to be present for only some solvers (this is not a fault of the solver, but rather than there is no uniform way to present sky angle and so, as a result SGPro will try to normalize a solver’s calculated sky angle into the standard equitorial angle. In this way, SGPro can treat all solves from all solvers in the same manner)

So… if you’re interested in assisting, the following would be of great help:

  • Logs showing the issue (this will anser 90% of all the questions here)
  • A fits image representing 1 or more manual angle correction attempts.

These 2 things actually would make it quite easy to trace and fix, but we rarely ever have them and have been unable to reproduce this issue on our own.

Additionally, it may be worth noting that SGPro cannot determine on its own which way you need to rotate because the image may be flipped via mirrors or digitial readout. Because of this, some folks need to tick the box to reverse the correction request arrows. That said, based on your description, it does not sound like this is your issue (or you may have this issue + the other issue). When I see some key phrases like 90 deg off, it is almost certainly the “other” issue we are trying to track down.

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the reply. It seems that replying to an email from the forum doesn’t get accepted, so I must use the web interface.

I can confirm a few things:

  • My image train is not flipping the image compared to the mosaic setup image.
  • The mosaic image has North (to Polaris) up, and the recommended 150 degree angle is correct

I’ll capture logs and and images the next time I can get out under clear skies.May be a while in November
