Microsoft Remote Desktop users - caution!

Hello folks, if you are using MRD from afar, be very careful with the latest Windows updates.
I updated my NUC to the latest yesterday, controlling it through MRD and Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, appear to have decided to disable Remote Desktop access option as a result. Fortunately, my NUC is in the back yard (or garden as we in the UK like to think of it) but if your’s is in a different country…

You must have been unlucky, as I’ve updated all my remote workstations & servers and none of them have re-booted with remote desktop disabled.

… What you may find is happening is that the “Network Location Awareness” service is starting too quickly, which then ‘sets’ the computer into a ‘local network\device’ mode, which has a knock-on effect of disabling access to the Remote Desktop Services !!

For workstations, a simple workaround is to set the service to “Automatic (Delayed Start)”, which a gives enough delay to stop blocking access.

thanks - that might be it - I upgraded the Win version and change my router on the same day.

I also discovered that the latest Win versions no longer have the option in netplwiz to disable power-on logon.

It’s still doable, to set whatever options you require, it just that you have to attack the registry e.g. Disable the Power button on the Login Screen in Windows 10

I noticed my MRD stopped working last week, maybe it’s since the update. Not too bothered as I use Team Viewer free for my remote Astro. So much better than MRD, easy to do file transfers etc whilst imaging.

For info, MRD can share folders from the client and also do copy paste across desktops. Do it all the time. Some others have had security concerns with Team Viewer, so be cautious.
