SGP does nothing during 1 hour in sequence

Hi Jared, Ken,

I got a rare failure this night, SGP did nothing between 01.59 and 03.00, zero log activity. My Atik 460ex could have hanged of course, it happens but rarely, but then wouldn’t SGP show some kind of activity or try to recover ?

Note that I still run SGP 3.2.0.600 on my Windows 7 PC in the observatory.

Antother point, I tried to submit this issue twice with the feature in the program, I got an exception. Did you receive it, I guess not ?

Thanks, Mikael

Hi Mikael,

perhaps this “issue” relates to the time shift to daylight saving time that was performed last night?

Bernd

Hi Bernd,

I suspect you are right. This sequence should have gone from 1h30 to about 5h30. So at 2h maybe the PC time was forwarded to 3h. Then, for some reason SGP sets unsafe condition and everything shuts down:

[03/28/21 03:00:08.626][DEBUG][Safety Thread][SQ;CC;] Sending Notification: Alert - Shutting down due to Unsafe Conditions.

This is a bit suspicious, because I think this was a perfectly cloudless night. Unfortuneately I dont log my AAGCW device, so I cannot prove that. Looking at the PHD2 graph nothing happens either, the starmass is perfectly stable until the shutdown. Curious!

Mikael

Update:

Had totally forgotten (embarrasingly) that I do have a second small application I wrote that connects to the AAGCW and plots the Sky temperature! It clearly shows very clear skies all through the night, and the discontinuity at 2h-3h shows when the PC changed time. No reason for an Unsafe condition to appear as I see it, I wonder is this is due to the time skipping, Ken, Jared ?

Mikael

Time shifts are problematic for all applications that depend on exact assignment of events to time, and sometimes this is essential. I experienced the year 2000 hype (a somewhat related case) as assistant plant manager in a chemical production. The software of the process control system was adapted to the millennium change in due time, nevertheless the manufacturers did not guarantee that all processes would work without fail. So all processes had to be shut down at 31. December and started new on 1. January for safety reasons!

Fortunately, our hobby is not as hazardous as chemical reactions.

Bernd

Indeed Bernd! Just some lost imaging time here, and anyway my attempt at imaging m94 with that moon was pretty optimistic, at best!

But it looks like SGP doesnt handle day Daylight saving time, because I had to advance all targets start and stop times by one hour for tonights imaging.
